Minecraft has been out a whole 17 years now, which makes me feel very old as I played it as a teenager when it launched, using (I believe) an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition and 9600 GT. Oh how times have changed. Now, Microsoft has updated its system requirements to 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 2060 or equivalent GPU for recommended performance in the Java version of the game.
Comparing this to an archived snapshot of the requirements from May last year, that’s 4x the RAM that was previously recommended, although another snapshot strangely does suggest that Microsoft recommended 4/8 GB back in 2022. And regarding the GPU, well, last year Microsoft still suggested a 700-series Nvidia GPU or equivalent for recommended performance. In other words, a big shift.

Note that the minimum requirements have been upped, too, from 2 GB of RAM to 8 GB (or 12 GB if you’re on an integrated GPU) and from Intel HD Graphics 4000 or equivalent to a GTX 950 or equivalent. CPU requirements have all been upped too, of course, with the recommended now being a Core i5 12400 or Ryzen 5 5600.
Bear in mind Microsoft isn’t saying anything has actually changed from when the previous system requirements were listed, it’s just updating its listed requirements to reflect the current state of the game, as these “no longer represent what the game needs to run well today.”
“Our goal is simple: we want to make it clear for players what kind of computer can run Java Edition smoothly. While older devices may still launch the game, they will struggle to deliver a good experience. This can lead to low frame rates, visual issues, long loading times, or performance that doesn’t match what players expect.”
Updating the requirements also helps us keep improving Minecraft. Supporting hardware that no longer runs the game well can limit what we’re able to modernize behind the scenes. By setting clearer recommendations, we can focus on making Java Edition better for our players.”
It’s still a very easy game to run compared to a lot of modern games, of course. You don’t want less than 16 GB of RAM these days even in a budget rig, and the RTX 2060 is now over six years old. I mean, compare that to a new game like Halo: Campaign Evolved which recommends an RX 9070 or Nvidia 3080 Ti, and it’s clear Mincraft Java Edition is still pretty lightweight.
