Watch On
There’s a new God of War game on the way, but unlike the last few, this one is unlikely to release on PC anytime in the foreseeable future.
Sony revealed the new game, called God of War Laufey, during its State of Play stream today. The star of this one is Kratos’ dead wife, Faye, whose body manifests in the afterlife after her burial rites.
“To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods—the Everywhen—where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic,” Santa Monica Studio said in a blog post.
The past three God of War games—God of War (2018), God of War Ragnarok, and God of War Valhalla—have all been ported to PC, in what was a change of heart for Sony, which previously kept its prestige PlayStation exclusives console-only.
Sony has had yet another change of heart, though, as we’ve heard reports of internal communications stating that it’s backing away from PC releases for its big singleplayer exclusives.
As PC Gamer’s Morgan Park observed in response to the news, the console wars are perhaps not quite over: “Much like Xbox’s renewed interest in its own box, Sony is responding to a waning interest in consoles by reinforcing its ‘narrative singleplayer games’ as system sellers once again.”
Sony will continue putting its multiplayer games on PC—it’d be crazy not to after the success of Helldivers 2—but unless it has yet another change of heart, don’t expect to see God of War Laufey or its other flagship exclusives on PC anytime soon.
There’s another big console exclusive coming later this year: Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar has once again opted to launch on Xbox and PlayStation only, with no PC release date yet announced, despite what an important platform the PC has been for GTA 5.
No release date for God of War Laufey has yet been announced, but Sony says it’s “coming soon to PlayStation 5!” I would guess that Sony will avoid putting it up against GTA 6 and release it in 2027.
