The International Esports Federation (IESF), in collaboration with Busan Metropolitan City, has released the Research Report on the World Esports Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics Guidelines, a major Research & Development (R&D) initiative aimed at supporting fair play, competitive integrity, and responsible innovation in the World of Esports.
The report documents the development of 27 ethics guidelines aimed to facilitate governing of the use of AI in esports training and competition. These include 10 general guidelines applicable across all esports training and competition contexts, as well as additional training-specific and competition-specific guidelines that address the distinct demands of preparation, live play, and officiating. Practical examples of acceptable and unacceptable AI use are included to clarify ethical risks and compliance recommendations.
Grounded in the principle that esports should remain a test of human skill, strategy, and teamwork, the guidelines define clear ethical boundaries to prevent misuse, unfair advantage, and harm to players. The report also outlines an application plan featuring an implementation checklist, an example enforcement matrix, and a proposal to establish a World Esports AI Ethics Officer Consortium to support oversight and long-term governance.
The research was authored by Dr. Seth E. Jenny of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Raymond Pastore of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The project was coordinated by IESF, funded by Busan Metropolitan City, and supported by Voice of Intercollegiate Esports (VOICE).
Through this initiative, IESF and Busan Metropolitan City reaffirm their commitment to the responsible and sustainable growth of esports, ensuring that emerging technologies are applied in ways that protect fairness, trust, and the human values at the core of competitive play.
