I love a 4K gaming monitor, but this 4K gaming projector has piqued my interest this Prime Day

Between the OLED right next to my gaming rig, and the 49-inch TV next to all of my consoles, I’m hardly hurting for a nice surface to game on. But what if I could game on something even bigger—say, the wall in my living room? Yes, it’s that point during the Amazon Prime Day sales where it’s finally time to talk about projectors.

The XGIMI Horizon 20 is a premium, 4K projector, blasting whatever you point it at with 3200 ISO Lumens. That’s pretty face-melting, and should offer vibrant colours right there on your surface of choice. I really wasn’t joking when I called this a ‘premium’ projector though; even with a 23% discount, this will still set you back $1,200 from Amazon.

To be fair to the box, this is the lowest price the base XGIMI Horizon 20 has been in a minute, and we’ve quite liked XGIMI’s offerings in the past (most recently, our Katie gave the XGIMI MoGo 4 laser projector a score of 88%). The base model is also a few hundred bucks less expensive than the even brighter Max and Pro models. In other words, if you’ve been saving your pennies in preparation for procuring a 4K projector, now might be the time to take the plunge.

In terms of gaming specifically, the XGIMI Horizon 20 offers a 1ms response time, and a refresh rate of 240 Hz. It’s worth reiterating this is a 4K projector, with an advertised resolution of 3840 x 2160. This tends to best suit a 27 to 32-inch display, so you may encounter some fuzziness if you decide to project an image much larger than that.

Outside of gaming-focussed features, the XGIMI Horizon 20 naturally offers plenty for the film buffs too. This includes HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and even ‘IMAX Enhanced’ billing.

There are plenty of more affordable projectors out there, but they likely won’t be as responsive for gaming, and probably not as bright. That means you’ll have to be much more careful about light leaks into whichever room you designate as your projection space, because competing light sources are more likely to muddy up the details of your projected image.

The biggest catch is that this is a deal only available for Amazon Prime members. You could in theory sign up for a free trial of Prime, buy the projector, and then cancel your subscription before you have to make your first payment, but that might feel a bit like playing with fire for the forgetful. Then again, paying more than a grand for any Amazon purchase is an experience few are likely to forget in a hurry.
