I’m not particularly convinced by the idea of dual-mode gaming monitors. Switching down from 4K to 1080p for a much higher refresh rate sounds good on paper, but in practice, I’ve heard mixed results. This LG OLED gaming monitor has just such a feature, but I don’t really care—I want it because it looks absolutely lush.
In 4K mode, it tops out with a 165 Hz refresh rate. Call me pedestrian, but that’s absolutely plenty for me. Should you wish to engage in some fast-paced competitive gaming, though, you can switch it to a 1080p resolution with a massive 330 Hz refresh rate.
Me, I’d likely keep it in 4K mode for just about everything, and simply enjoy the benefits of its OLED panel. LG is known for making some of the best, and this one has some excellent specs. Near-infinite contrast ratio, a blink-and-you’ll-definitely-miss-it 0.03 ms response time, and Micro Lens Array+ technology for a 275 nits typical brightness rating.
That’s brighter than the older LG OLED panels, but not super impressive on paper. Still, as someone who uses a 4K 32-inch Mini LED display on the daily (with a whopping max brightness of 1000 nits), let me tell you—massive eye-searing nit levels are overrated.
I dare anyone to turn up my display beyond 40% brightness and leave without a headache. Nah, I’d rather have the super-vivid color reproduction and lower brightness of a good OLED, and the LG promises just that. It’s also got a glossy coating, which should really make those colors pop, whizz, and bang.
Rounding off the package is G-Sync and FreeSync Premium Pro support, alongside two HDMI 2.1 ports, a DisplayPort 1.4 connection, one USB 3.0 upstream port, and two USB 3.0 downstream versions.
Yep, it’s got everything I’d want in a good OLED display. And more besides. So, even if dual-mode doesn’t get your pulse racing, I’d say this is still a monitor deal worth some serious consideration if you’ve got the cash.
